It may still be winter and below freezing in parts of the country, but one California beer maker is already hitting the sand with a surf documentary, the latest in a series of docs chronicling its sports-affiliated brand ambassadors.
Earlier this month 805 beer released the trailer for the upcoming film “Making Waves,” a documentary on professional surfer Lakey Peterson, which will be released Mar. 1.
The connection between the brand and the topic of surfing? 805 is the official craft beer partner of the World Surf League North America.
The beautifully shot short trailer, seen here, shows striking vignettes from the film of Peterson’s surfing career, interspersed with scenes of her life out of the water at home and with friends and family.

The film chronicles Peterson’s rise from surf prodigy to global competitor, using archival footage and cameos from a few of the big names in the sport such as pro surfer (and “805 Authentico” aka ambassador) Conner Coffin, pro surfer Sage Erickson and World Surfing League commentator Strider Wasilewski. Peterson is known for her performances at Pipeline, the US Open and Surf Ranch Pro, and is ranked as high as #2 in the WSL Championship Tour.
“Lakey’s journey embodies everything 805 Beer stands for; perseverance, passion, and pushing limits,” said Dustin Hinz, CMO of Firestone Walker Brewing Company, in the announcement. “Through ‘Making Waves,’ we’re honored to share her story, one of resilience, self-discovery, and the unbreakable bond between a surfer and the ocean. It’s a film about living with purpose, taking risks, and carving your own path.”
The film will be available globally on Mar. 1 on the World Surf League website as well as on YouTube and other social platforms.
“Making Waves” is just the latest film project for 805 Beer Films, which “highlight the incredible stories of their team of ambassadors which they fondly refer to as Authenticos.” Previous films include “Another Eight Seconds,” which followed nine-time Professional Bull Riding world finals qualifier, Stetson Lawrence; “The House That Built Me,” which told the story of X-Games champion and Motocross Freerider Tyler Bereman; “and “Inverted Perspective,” which chronicled the story of the most winning female Motocross rider on the planet, Vicki Golden.
