Will Ferrell Sings A New (Familiar) Tune In His Return For PayPal

Will Ferrell returns for PayPal’s latest campaign, singing a different tune.

The comedian starred in last year’s “Everywhere” ad for the payment service, reimagining the Fleetwood Mac song of the same name as part of the payment service brand’s largest-ever U.S. campaign.

“Last year’s campaign marked a pivotal moment for our brand as we reintroduced ourselves to customers,” PayPal CMO Geoff Seeley told Marketing Daily. “We had a great response to the campaign and, as we announced at Investor Day earlier this year, saw over 3 million first-time PayPal Debit Card users.”

Ferrell applies the same approach to a different Fleetwood Mac song in a new ad called “Pay Your Own Way.” Riffing on the “Rumours” track, Ferrell runs through a range of flexible payment options. While last year’s campaign focused on where you could pay with PayPal, the follow-up campaign shifts its focus to how PayPal customers can pay.

“With the help of Will Ferrell’s signature humor and another classic hit from Fleetwood Mac, we are driving home the idea that consumers can pay their own way with PayPal,” citing the "powerful story…centered around the choice and flexibility we offer customers to pay now or over time with buy now, pay later.”

“Pay Your Own Way” made its TV debut last weekend during the NBA Playoffs, a strategic choice to launch another “marquee PayPal campaign during a major U.S. sporting event,” according to Seeley. Last year’s campaign was timed to the start of NFL season. 

“As we put (and keep) PayPal top-of-mind for our customers, we want to capitalize on culturally relevant moments where can showcase why PayPal is the smartest way to pay,” Seeley added. “As we near summer we are also hitting key shopping moments including Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, and graduation celebrations.”

The ad is part of an expansive new campaign for PayPal across channels including out-of-home, digital, streaming and radio, podcast reads, influencer marketing initiatives, and social media.

Seeley said the “Pay Your Own Way” campaign will continue running through the end of July, adding, “Customers can expect to see Will Ferrell across various TV networks during major events, and all over their social media channels.”
