Four Grown-Up Virgins Search For First-Time Sex On TLC

For entertainment behind the scenes of the TV biz, nothing is likely more satisfying than the meetings convened at TLC for the purpose of throwing around ideas for bizarre, new TV shows.

“Hey, picture this one!” some programming staffer might have declared with great enthusiasm at one such meeting recently. “One word: Virgins!”

And so it came to pass -- a new reality series about four people well into their adulthoods who have never had sex. And now, they wish to do so.

This show’s concept was apparently considered to be so sure-fire that it has a one-word title, “Virgins.”

It premieres June 9 -- in a month when thousands of couples will have their weddings.

In the TV show, however, matrimony is not necessarily the goal, although it would be nice.

“ ‘Virgins’ isn’t just about sex,” insists a TLC press release. “It’s about embracing vulnerability and pushing past fears where the real climax is confidence, connection and self-love.”

“Embracing vulnerability and pushing past fears” might best describe 42-year-old Rhasha of Jacksonville, Florida (above photo, third from left) who seeks to go from lifelong celibacy directly into role-playing and BDSM. Hey, slow down there, Rhasha!

Rhasha is one of the four people who agreed to be on this show. They have all led lives in which sex has eluded them for various reasons.

For example, 35-year-old Deanne of Los Angeles (photo, second from left) is described by TLC as “finicky.” She has “high standards,” says TLC, and is “quick to dismiss any man she meets.”

Meanwhile, the only man of the four is 34-year-old Alex from Reading, Pennsylvania (photo, right), who “lives in his parents’ attic and drives his mom’s minivan,” TLC says. He is “a textbook failure to launch,” says the press release.

“From tantra speed dating to testing pickup lines at a bar, will Alex finally take that next step toward adulthood and sex?”

Finally, there’s Sonali, 37, of Hollywood, California (photo, left), “a south Asian woman [who] dreams of a romantic first time filled with jazz, wine and rose petals, but reality hasn’t quite matched the fantasy,” TLC says.

She has had a conservative upbringing, fears intimacy and has barely dated. “Now, she begins a personal journey toward sexual awakening.”

Yes, her journey and the other three journeys are all “personal,” but they are also “private,” which begs the same old question: Why are people so willing to go on reality TV shows to share the most private corners of their lives?

I'd call it "Virgins On The Ridiculous".
