Goodbye, Nuisance Emails: Gmail Shows Who Sent What, Streamlines Opt-Out

Gmail has launched a feature designed to relieve users from sheer inbox overload, starting with a view of the emails they have received from certain senders.

The new offering, Manage Subscriptions, allows Gmail account holders to easily unsubscribe from “Daily deal alerts that are basically spam, weekly newsletters from blogs you no longer read, promotional emails from retailers you haven't shopped in years,” according to a Gmail blog post.

Gmail account holders can now click on the most frequent senders for a direct view of all the emails they have sent in the past few weeks. “Easily unsubscribe in one click, and Gmail will send an unsubscribe request to the sender on your behalf,” the post says.

This capability is now rolling out now on “web, Android and iOS to select countries,” Gmail adds.

It sounds good, although there still seems to be a certain amount of work involved. And it’s not clear how this will affect email lists.

Moreover, do privacy conscious consumers really want Gmail or anyone else to see the full range of their unsubscribes in one place?

Still, Gmail argues that the new tool is beneficial.

Our requirements for senders and tools like one-click unsubscribe give you even more control to choose and actually stop getting emails you no longer want,” Gmail says. “And the new “Manage subscriptions” view makes it easier than ever to manage what stays and what goes.”

To obtain this view, users need to click the navigation bar in the top-left corner of their inbox and select “Manage subscriptions.”

This reporter is ready to give it a try.
