Listen Up At Spotify: Audio Platform Offers Narrated Magazine Articles

Spotify is bringing audio to magazine articles via its Spotify Audiobooks service.

Starting on Wednesday, Spotify is offering 650 long-form magazine articles to users who have access to audiobooks.

The name of this product? Articles.

The curated selection includes stories from Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, WIRED, Vanity Fair, Pitchfork and other publications. Each narrated article comes in at under two hours.

(It’s not clear that legendary mega-stories like “Frank Sinatra Has A Cold,” by Gay Talese, would fit into that timeframe).

Each article is available to Premium users within their monthly audiobooks allowance, along with Spotify’s existing audiobook library. Others can purchase individual articles for $1.99 apiece.

“With Articles, we’re introducing long-form journalism in audio as a natural extension of the music, podcasts, and audiobooks people already come to Spotify for, focused on topics we know they love,” said Colleen Prendergast, licensing lead at Spotify Audiobooks.

Not that these are books.

“By bringing shorter form content into the mix, we’re meeting audiences where they are to help build healthy listening habits, ultimately growing engagement with books over time,” Prendergast adds.

What’s in it for publishers?

“This collaboration with Articles allows us to deepen the connection between our readers and the artists, stories, and features they care about, while also providing an opportunity for discovery,” says Julian Holguin, CEO, Rolling Stone.

Articles will bring Rolling Stone’s storytelling to an even wider audience, Holguin adds.
