Test Drive: Toyota Pulls Out All Stops With Sequoia

Toyota didn't set out to prove it could offer vehicles every bit as luxurious as its Lexus sibling, but it accomplished just that with the Toyota Sequoia 4WD Capstone Hybrid.

I recently spent some time behind the wheel of the spare-no-expense vehicle. Indeed, the starting MSRP is $84,435. The version I drove topped $90,000, with options including the newly offered TRD Performance Pack. For $2,299, drivers get 29 additional horsepower, improved throttle response and a sportier exhaust note.

It requires the use of 91 octane premium fuel, but if you can afford a $90k vehicle, the price of fuel probably isn’t high on your list of priorities.  The increased horsepower made freeway maneuvers, including merging, a breeze.

Nearly everything is included as standard equipment on this trim level, including a premium JBL sound system with 14 speakers.

Toyota highlighted the vehicle in its Winter Olympics advertising in a spot released in February called “Olympics: Affirmations” from Saatchi & Saatchi.  The Sequoia was featured alongside Team Toyota athletes—including Jessie Diggins (cross-country skiing) and Andrew Kurka (para alpine skiing).

It’s a massive three-row vehicle and parking can be tricky, but is made easier due to the excellent camera system and video display.. The powered side step makes it easier to get in and out.

I needed cargo space, so I easily folded up the third row of seats. Drivers can fold down the power third-row seats and slide them forward or back to customize the cargo space, and stay organized with a durable cargo shelf system.

Between the imposing grille front grill and the roar of the engine, it would be hard to miss the Sequoia in your rearview mirror. Indeed, other drivers seemed to get out of my way during my drives.

Toyota calls the Capstone edition the ultra-premium, top-of-the-line flagship trim for the full-size, three-row SUV. “It acts as a luxury tuxedo for the rugged body-on-frame chassis, blending heavy-duty towing capacity with high-end cabin amenities,” according to the automaker.

The 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia includes wireless Apple CarPlav and Android Auto compatibility which was a breeze to pair. Also included is a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10-inch head-up display.
