Fun-Loving Ex-Prez Plays Along With Larry

Now long out of office, President Obama is still the nation’s Comedian In Chief as he takes up a starring role in Larry David’s new HBO series “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness.

The fun-loving ex-prez was deeply involved in the show -- not only on-screen, but also behind the scenes.

The show comes from Higher Ground, the production company that Obama owns with his wife, Michelle.

The 44th President of the United States introduces the show on-camera and also turns up in one of the show’s satirical sketches that lampoon people, moments and events in American history.

Despite the presence of the popular former president, the seven-episode show has been panned by critics in advance of its premiere date.

They say the show relies heavily on tired comedy bits recycled from David’s previous HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Seinfeld,” which he co-created with Jerry Seinfeld.

But it is doubtful that the thumbs-down reviews will curb Obama’s enthusiasm for “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness.”

On the contrary, in the publicity photo above provided by HBO, the ex-president is seen enjoying a hearty laugh with David. Obama even teamed up with David to tape a lighthearted promo spot for the show.

Obama previously revealed his love for TV comedy way back in December 2014 when he delivered a comic monologue on “The Colbert Report” a few days before the show ended and Colbert left Comedy Central.

On that show, the president was the sole guest, and he showed his comedy chops when he sat in for Colbert at the host’s desk to deliver a monologue originally written for Colbert.

And then a year later, the 44th prez appeared on Seinfeld’s car-based comedy show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” in which the then-sitting President sat in the passenger seat of a 1963 Corvette Stingray and traded high-spirited one-liners with Seinfeld.

In the making of “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness,” producer Obama got a chance to work again with Seinfeld.

The “Seinfeld” star co-stars in a sketch on “Life, Larry” that explores the history of the Lewis and Clark expedition with David playing Meriweather Lewis and Seinfeld playing William Clark.

The extent of David’s and Obama’s personal relationship has come into focus in the days and weeks leading up to the premiere of “Life, Larry.”

On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” earlier this month, David revealed that he and the ex-prez often play golf together, during which Obama has good-naturedly kidded David about the amount of sunblock David uses.

Fans of President Obama have long considered him to be a stand-up guy, but now it may be time for the stand-up guy to try stand-up comedy.
