Nostalgia In A Bucket: KFC Revives Fan-Favorite Popcorn Chicken

KFC is bringing back a retro fan favorite menu item that will have customers reaching for the popcorn in anticipation—popcorn chicken, that is.

The chicken chain’s Popcorn Chicken returns to menus this week, which, according to KFC, “mark[s] the comeback of one of the brand's most requested items in recent memory.”

“For years, KFC has heard directly from fans clamoring for Popcorn Chicken's return. We read every comment, every DM, and even every online petition signature, and the message was impossible to ignore,” said Melissa Cash, CMO, KFC U.S., in a release.  “As we continue our Kentucky Fried Comeback journey, this menu item return shows our commitment to listening to our most passionate fans by giving them exactly what they're craving. We're nodding to nostalgia as we simultaneously modernize the brand and how it shows up throughout the world.”

The brand is commemorating the throwback snackable chicken’s return with a series of appropriately named “popcorn GIFs,” available for download here. In a partnership with Giphy, KFC’s GIFs feature the Colonel “giving fans a Kentucky Fried way to react in the exact moments they're already reaching for a popcorn meme.”

In the approximately dozen new GIFs, the Colonel is seen excitedly popping Popcorn Chicken in a theater or against a trippy chicken background.

Customers will have three options when ordering Popcorn Chicken: the $10 Popcorn Chicken Bucket, which includes a 16 oz. bucket with four dipping sauces; the Popcorn Chicken Big Box, with six oz. of Popcorn Chicken, two Original Recipe Tenders, a medium order of fries, a medium drink, two dipping sauces and a chocolate chunk cookie for $10.99; or the Popcorn Chicken Combo, with 6 oz. of Popcorn Chicken, a medium order of fries, a medium drink and one dipping sauce for $8.49.

Popcorn chicken first appeared at KFC in the early 1990s and remained on menus until 2023.
