Hachette, Elsevier Sue Google, Claiming It Used Their Content To Build Gemini Models

Author Scott Turow and a group of leading publishers, including Hachette Book Group, Cengage Learning and Elsevier, have sued Google for allegedly using millions of books and articles without permission to build its Gemini artificial intelligence models, The Wrap reports. It also did so without compensating the publishers, the plaintiffs charge, calling this "one of the most prolific infringements of copyrighted materials in history." Google also used the content to compete with the publishers by providing detailed summaries, they continue. The case is on file with the U.S. District for the Southern District of New York.
