As social media companies further
prioritize the use of artificial intelligence technology, TikTok has laid off its entire 250-person staff in Nashville, Tennessee, effectively closing the office on October 5 and exiting the
region.
“We have decided to close our Nashville office to streamline our operations and better align our
teams for long-term growth,” said TikTok USDS Joint Venture spokesperson Zanna Crowley in The Tennessean.
Following several years in which TikTok occupied offices on multiple floors of a Nashville WeWork coworking building, the social media company leased the 143,610-square-foot space on Music
Row in April 2024.

TikTok’s Music Row office marked a strategic move to align itself with creative and
music agencies, with the company aiming to fortify its platform with emerging musicians and labels.
The
layoffs notably include members of TikTok’s content-moderation team.
The office closure comes six
months after TikTok’s U.S. business merged into a new
joint venture led by a group of American investors.
Despite TikTok’s reputation as a powerful tool for music discovery and music-related
promotions, the company shuttered its music streaming
service in November 2024 and saw the departure of its former Global Head of Music Partnership Development Michael Kümmerle late last year.
Competing social media companies have laid off staff over the past year as they invest more heavily in AI for automated moderation and business efforts, including Meta, Snapchat, and Pinterest.
