Six former child stars from the 1990s TV hits are coming to HGTV this week in a competition to renovate ’90s homes and bring them into the 21st century.

According to the show -- titled “Totally ’90s House” -- nostalgia for ’90s is red-hot, but affection for the decade’s home décor is not.

HGTV is hoping that nostalgia for the pop culture of the ’90s will draw viewership from audiences who came of age in the post-Cold War decade.

To draw them in, HGTV has corralled six stars of the era plus a seventh who will host the show.

He is Jaleel White, 49 (above photo, center), who will forever be remembered as Steve Urkel, the nerdy neighbor on the ABC (later CBS) sitcom “Family Matters.”

Joining him on the show are (above photo, left to right): Jodie Sweetin, 44 (“Full House,” 1987-95, ABC), Beverley Mitchell, 45 (“7th Heaven,” 1996-2006, The WB), Brian Austin Green, 53 (“Beverly Hills, 90210,” 1990-2000, Fox), Matthew Lawrence, 46 (“Boy Meets World,” 1993-2000, ABC), Melissa Joan Hart, 50 (“Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” 1996-2000, ABC), and Keshia Knight Pulliam, 47 (“The Cosby Show,” 1984-92, NBC).

The six will be divided into two teams of three. Each team will be challenged to make over a ’90s house chosen from the many entries that HGTV solicited on social media.

HGTV personalities Sabrina Soto (“The High Low Project”) and Carter Oosterhouse (“Carter Can”) will serve as renovation guides and mentors. 

Other judges drawn from HGTV’s roster of DIY and design shows include Paige Albiniak (“Trading Spaces”), Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt (“100 Day Dream Home”), Vern Yip (“Home Reimagined”), Drew Lachey (“Rock the Block”) and Mina Starsiak Hawk (“Good Bones”).

Of the six ’90s TV stars, four of them represent sitcoms that were part of ABC’s “TGIF” Friday night lineup of family sitcoms that were hugely successful for ABC, and apparently remembered fondly by a generation who grew up on them: “Full House,” “Family Matters,” “Boy Meets World” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”

Three of them were on the TGIF lineup at the same time: “Family Matters,” “Boy Meets World” and “Sabrina.” 

Of the two other shows represented on “Totally ’90s House,” “Beverly Hills, 90210” is the best qualified to represent the ’90s because the show’s run literally spanned the decade from 1990 to 2000.

The show premiered in the fourth season of the Fox network, which was launched in October 1986.

As for “The Cosby Show,” most of us probably associate that show more with the 1980s than the ’90s, although it did last until April 1992.

“Totally ’90s House” premieres Wednesday night (August 26) at 9 p.m. Eastern on HGTV.
