Do you need a laugh, uh, like right now? Ever fancied yourself a comedian? Are you trying out bits on your friends so you can land a late-night gig on Conan, Jay, or Dave, or maybe just a stint doing
stand-up at open-mike nights?
If so, there's a new online comedy venue called DailyComedy.com that may be just the ticket. The site, which launched officially last week, enables fledgling
comedians and anyone looking for some funnies to indulge their passion for comedy. Not only is DailyComedy an online community where users can create their own personal comedy pages and a place to
post, share, and comment on jokes, but it employs more than a dozen professional comedians who regularly turn up on the late-night shows and make the rounds on the comedy club circuit.
The
site was co-founded by former AOL marketing exec Charlie Warner and comedian Ray Ellin, who emcees weekend shows at New York's famed Comic Strip and is involved in a number of writing and producing
endeavors for TV and film. Now Ellin, who's been doing standup since he was a teen, has taken his talents to the Web where he, along with a roster of professional comics, deliver fresh and topical
bits all day long. DailyComedy has a number of projects in the works, including introducing short comic Webisodes, original video, and we're sure, other cool content and social networking
maneuvers.
While I'm not thinking of setting up a comedy stage any time soon, I recently took a spin around the site to sample some of the bits--and it looks like a promising venture. A
co-marketing and promotional alliance with MySpace wouldn't hurt, since the social network is busy developing its own comedy channel which will be filled with comedy and video generated by its own
users. Most of the DailyComedy comedians have big presences on MySpace, which recently announced plans to team up with comedy clubs to set up live video feeds of shows. The idea of live Webcasts is an
interesting one.
Now, the name of the game for DailyComedy is luring advertisers and co-marketing partnerships. Spirits and beverage brands, apparel marketers, Hollywood studios touting
upcoming releases, auto makers, video games, and fast food chains are just a few of the advertiser categories that would be a great fit for the site.
