Hannaford, Sesame Street Join In Fruit Promo

Sesame Workshop is working with 158-store chain Hannaford Supermarkets to get kids to try different apples.

The Apple of the Month program features an in-store display of Sesame Street characters touting Fuji, Pink Lady and Granny Smith apples, for starters.

Children can collect stickers from each variety to put on an activity sheet that describes unique traits about the fruit.

The partnership is part of Sesame Street's "Healthy Habits for Life" initiative that began in 2004. It has launched several licensing deals and partnerships with Del Monte to put Sesame Street characters on cans of vegetables and with Sunkist to use the Muppets to sell strawberries and blueberries.

Maine-based Hannaford Brothers Co. has taken a leadership position among retailers promoting healthy foods. Last year it launched the "Guiding Stars," a program that awards one, two or three nutritional stars to more than 27,000 food items based on its own nutritional standards.
