Had to go with this one...
"Never teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig." -Craig Macdonald, SEMDirector. Craig conjured up this analagy to describe why it's a
bad idea to take content/messaging created for the TV or computer screen and put it on a mobile device.
Really? So much for trying to save clients a buck by repurposing their existing assets when possible. Of course I realize that not all interactive or broadcast assets can be used in other mediums, but many can. Further, smart marketers should develop strategies that take into consideration that assets can be used for more than one medium.
I am confused by the analogy however. Is he saying that trying to use a tv spot as a mobile promotion would annoy the tv spot? Or is he saying that if you teach a pig to sing it will make an annoying interactive ad?
I think he should have thought of something more suitable like "You can use a screw driver to drive a screw, and a drill to make a whole. If you've thought it out you can just get a screw bit for your drill so you can do both with the same tool."
I'm sure someone that is better read than I can come up with a better quote.
maybe craig is telling us not to take the "customer is king" dogma too far.
throwing pearls at swine is crude,
making fat ladies sing is chauvinistic.
so maybe this is craig's unconscious mind's concoct -call it craig truths.
I believe the actual question to ask should be:
"When does a pig become a hog?"
