Boomers More Likely To Vote, Less Likely To See Selves As Liberal

The most recent survey results from Mediamark Research Inc. (MRI) relating to Baby Boomers may not thrill liberal political candidates.

Over half--55%--of those born between 1946 and 1964 report that they have voted in a federal, state or local election during the past 12 months, making them 22% more likely to do so than the general adult population, according to "BoomerView" generational segments data within MRI's Spring 07 "Survey of the American Consumer."

Boomers are also 21% more likely than adults as a whole to have signed a petition in the past year (21.7% report having done so) and 11% more likely to say that "preserving the environment is a very important guiding principle in their lives" (40.7% affirmed this is important).

However, Boomers are slightly (-2%) less likely than the overall adult population to say that they consider themselves "somewhat or very liberal, politically" (15.5% of Boomers describe themselves that way).

Other findings about Boomers, especially as they differentiate from adults as a whole:

* 35.6% report living in a household that owns or leases at least three vehicles (31% more likely than the overall adult population).

* 30.8% did home remodeling during the last 12 months (21% more likely).

* Only 18.1% carry disability insurance--yet, this means Boomers are 45% more likely to carry disability coverage than adults overall.

* 76.8% say that they do personally carry some medical, hospital or accident insurance (6% more likely than adults overall). However, this obviously means that 23%, or nearly one-quarter, of Boomers may be unprotected in the event of a medical crisis.

* 41% have played the lottery in the past 12 months (18% more likely).

* They are 5% less likely than adults in general to believe that they will be better off financially in the next 12 months than they are now (39.1% of Boomers do believe they'll be better off).

* 42.4% exercise at least two times per week (2% more likely).

* Nearly 14% own a giant-screen (42" or larger) TV (10% more likely).

* 41% believe that "there's too much sex on television" (5% more likely).

* 40% report that they "like to do new things" (5% more likely).
