The new government of the nation long known as Burma changed the country's name to Myanmar in 1989, following a military junta and the bloody massacre of pro-democracy demonstrators. Some news outlets - along with Burmese opposition groups - refused to recognize the name change and still consider the government illegitimate, while others have adopted it. This might have led to some confusion for those following reports of the latest uprising in the country this fall.
