Verizon Taps NFL Star To Promote Local TV

Verizon has turned to an NFL star to promote its FiOS TV offering locally in the Tampa, Fla. area.

The company has signed Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Joey Galloway to star in a radio, print and outdoor campaign plugging the sports channels it offers, notably the NFL Network.

FiOS has been available in the area since 2005, where it serves as a challenger to cable provider Bright House Networks. Verizon is looking to encourage customers to switch to the service, partly to receive NFLN.

In print ads, Galloway is quoted as saying: "I switched to Verizon FiOS from Bright House to get NFL Network. You should, too!"

Cable operators recently have acknowledged that FiOS poses a notable threat to their customer base after downplaying it for some time.
