Finalist - New/Experimental/Emerging Media
This idea is simplicity in action. To show people its premium online programming, The Weather Channel gave users free Wi-Fi in a place where there is a large, captive crowd that badly needs Wi-Fi and mobile reception: Grand Central Terminal. Specifically, in the terminal's lower level dining concourse, adjacent to 26 commuter rail lines. When visitors logged in, they would first view clips of TWC's original program, Epic Conditions. The Wi-Fi service was promoted with local newspaper coverage, signs in the terminal and inclusion in online and offline terminal publications. Overall investment was less than $100,000.
