YouTube Removes, Later Restores, Anti-Scientology Videos

  • September 9, 2008
YouTube briefly removed up to 3,000 of anti-Scientology videos late Thursday night, but restored them by Friday afternoon, according to digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation.

For one of the uploaders, Mark Bunker, who runs the YouTube channel XenuTv, the incident was nearly a repeat of one this spring. In April, his clips also were targeted and briefly removed, but restored after he convinced YouTube they didn't infringe on anyone's copyright.

Last week's takedown notices were sent by a group identifying itself as the "American Rights Counsel." Bunker said the takedown notice didn't provide any identifying information about this group other than its name.--Wendy Davis
