• Google Preps 'Family Library' For Play Store
    Google has set a launch date of July 2 for Family Library -- a way for trusted family members to share Play Store purchases among each other. “Importantly, developers can decide whether or not purchases prior to July 2nd can be shared among families,” Android Police notes. “Unlike purchases after July 2nd, developers must opt infor older purchases to go into the library.”
  • Uber Bows "Trip Tracker" To Track Family Members' Trips
    Uber is rolling out “Trip Tracker” -- a new tool that will let family members track each others’ rides. “The addition is a feature connected to Uber’s Family Profiles, a program Uber announced in March which allows customers to pay for rides for their family and friends,” TechCrunch writes. “With Family Profiles, users can add other Uber riders to a group and can then bill all the group members’ trips to the same payment card.”

    With a focus on increased security, Chinese authorities are subjecting American tech companies and their products to new levels of scrutiny. “Apple and other companies in recent months have been subjected to reviews that target encryption and the data storage of tech products,” The New York Times reports, citing sources.
  • FindFace App Threatens Public Anonymity
    The Guardian considers FindFace -- a new app that lets users photograph people in a crowd, and identity them with 70% accuracy. Based in Russia, “It works by comparing photographs to profile pictures on Vkontakte, a social network popular in Russia and the former Soviet Union, with more than 200 million accounts.”
  • Samsung Could Launch Foldable Phone Next Year
    Internet buzz says the South Korean giant will release five smartphones in 2017 — the Samsung Galaxy S8, the S8 Edge, the Galaxy Note 7, the Note 7 Edge, and the Galaxy X. The Galaxy X is the highlight here — a new category of Samsung’s lineup that will focus on the company’s first foldable display for smartphones.

    App users have noticed that many of the face-altering filters "whitewash." They note that the flower crown filter and the "beautifying" filter,  seem to lighten skin and eyes and contour the face to make one's chin and nose appear smaller.
  • Apple Invests $1B in Chinese 'Uber'
    Apple has invested $1 billion in Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing, it revealed on Thursday. “The tech giant's rare investment gives it a stake in two burgeoning waves of technology -- the sharing economy and car technology -- as the iPhone business that propelled it to record profitability shows signs of maturing,” Reuters writes.
  • IOS Losing Global Ground To Android
    During the first quarter, Android grew significantly in the U.S., Europe, and China, while Apple’s iOS lost ground, according to new data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. “In the top five European markets (U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Spain), Android’s market share increased to 75.6 percent, up 7.1 percent compared to the same period a year ago,” Venture Beat reports.
  • Apple Reduced App Approval Times
    Apple has reduced the time it takes to approve new submissions to its App Store from more than a week to less than two days. Bloomberg suggests that the improvement is “part of a broader push to increase revenue from services including mobile applications.”
  • Nokia Misses With First-Quarter Earnings
    Nokia’s first-quarter earnings failed to meet Wall Street’s expectations, this week. The Wall Street Journal attributed the miss to “sluggish mobile-network sales and charges related to the recent acquisition of French rival Alcatel-Lucent SA. Previously, “Nokia … said that the acquisition would help it diversify revenue stream beyond core customers.”
