2D Codes Are The New CueCat

It’s been a long time since I heard CueCat invoked on an online industry panel, but that’s exactly what “Economy” panel moderator Peter Kafka thought of when his panel started discussing the emergence of so-called 2D codes â€" two dimensional codes in static, and moving offline media, that have hyperlinks embedded in them that enable consumers to link to more info online.

“This tsunami is coming,” PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Michael D. Kelley predicted of the new offline/online linking technology. Others weren’t sure, and debated whether 2D codes would simply go the way of the CueCat, a nifty computer mouse-like device that could roll over printed codes and automatically link to relevant content online.

By the way, for those who don’t recall, the CueCat was developed by a company called Digital Convergence Corporation. Maybe digital convergence finally is here.
