CBS Radio Launches All-Sports Stations In Boston, D.C.

On Air sign Sports fans in Boston and Washington, D.C., will be able to get their regular fix via radio beginning this summer, with the introduction of two new all-sports stations by CBS Radio.

The Washington station -- 106.7 ("The Fan") -- is set to launch on Monday, July 20; the Boston station -- 98.5 ("The Sports Hub") will launch Thursday, August 13. Both stations will feature live, local sports announcers and personalities giving reports, discussion, commentary and play-by-play coverage of local sports teams.

Previously, 106.7 in Washington was an all-talk format, featuring morning talkers the Junkies as well as "The Mike O'Meara Show," "The Jim Rome Show" and "Loveline." In Boston, 98.5 was previously a "hot adult contemporary" format; CBS is moving the Hot AC format to 104.1, bumping progressive rock station WCBN to an Internet-only operation.

CBS already owns and operates all-sports stations in 12 major markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Baltimore and Sacramento.

Dan Mason, the president and CEO of CBS Radio, touted the ability of all-sports formats to help advertisers reach male listeners, including various sponsorship opportunities for different delivery channels. In addition to the airwaves, the new all-sports formats will be available online and on mobile devices, including the iPhone and Blackberry. Advertisers will have the ability to reach target consumers by Zip code with text, audio and video messages.

The stations will share relevant local and national content with CBSSports.com, with Web sites featuring big-name columnists, blogs maintained by station personalities, on-demand video highlights, real-time scores and breaking news.

The station Web sites will also host community participation with forums and fan clubs, as well as fantasy football, baseball, basketball and hockey leagues.

Oops! Attention: Proofreader - Headline should substitute "Boston" for "NY". And shouldn't the call letters for the progressive rock station be referred to as WBCN, not WCBN? Hmmm...

Good catch Robert Wilson. Mel Karmazin must be laughing like crazy.
