The Week In Parties, New York
August 18-20, 2009
Welcome back to Monday, friends, the day that introduces us to the workweek with a sneer. I'm sneering right back in my muumuu. It's not really a muumuu, but it's a shapeless "you can sweat in this and no one will be the wiser" air flow welcoming frock that I scooped up two years ago with the intentions of "cinching it" but never completed that step. It's working great today even though it makes me look like transgender SpongeBob. Which it totally fine by me. Let's see how I'll be keeping cool during this continuing Africa-hot (Biloxi Blues anyone?) week in the city that definitely never sleeps if it doesn't have air conditioning (ask me, I'm an expert).
I am the very model of a modern major general. My Momma always told me to watch out for sailors, which is why I've decided to join 'em instead of ... beating 'em? Give-and-Date.com pairs philanthropy with philandering while sailing aboard Shearwater Sailboat. They partnered with Green Drinks NYC to co-host a new series of singles events called "Single Mingle", the launch being on Tuesday August 18. Fundage raised goes to Council on the Environment of New York City. Just imagine: me, my camera, drinks, singles, the water, the sunset, the skyline. Splish Splash.
Blazing saddles. On Wednesday August 19, I'll be heading over to the AMP3 offices for a sneaky peaky at Blazetrack.com. Looks like I'll be joining an interesting cast of characters including Michael Gruen (co-author of Twitter For Dummies), Tom Chau (AOL Radio), Tia Walker (Founder/Blogger of The Quest For It), Yuli Ziv (Founder of My It Things and Style Coalition), Brett Petersel (mashable), Maegan Carberry (Journalist / Huff Po), Charlie Oliver (founder of ArtOfTalk.tv), Greentarget's Andrew Graham, Nate Westheimer (President of NY Tech Meet Up), Jessica Bailis (Digital Mktg & Strategy of Universal Music Group), Larry Flick (Sirius Radio). I've met a few of these peoples at previous events and now, because it's an intimate crowd, some will not be able to pretend they don't remember. Or at least, they'll get busted for honestly not remembering me. Hmm, I need a schtick.
Did I misread your tone? Undertone Networks is throwing a rooftop party to celebrate their summer successes. Let's hope that weather forecast does its usual "ole switcheroo" in the middle of the week and those thunderstorms I see predicted are replaced by nothing but clear skies and 5% humidity, with a cooling breeze and air quality that makes you lose 10lbs instantly just by breathing.
I'm a picker, I'm a grinner, I'm a lover, and I'm a sinner. Friday I'll be working from Baltimore, but you'll still get the write up from Thursday night's party because I'm just that committed to our relationship. Why Baltimore you ask? I'll be heading to see Steve Miller Band in Soloman's Island. Want to hear something nifty and totally off the Just An Online Minute path? My boyfriend has known bassist Billy Peterson since he was a mullet sporting 12-year-old. How fun is that? Yes we'll be calling ahead to see if we can hang!
There you have it, my little buddies - hopefully I'll see you around! If I don't, we'll just have to keep in touch the way we usually do!
Send invitations to kelly@mediapost.com and let's fly like an eagle together!
Hey Kelly,
Here's a little story I'd love you to pass on to your friend Billy from the Steve Miller band. Last year I went all over the northeast with my daughter Kelsey visiting out colleges and taking her to auditions to get in their musical theater programs. She ended up at NYU at the Tisch school and will be starting her second year there is a couple of weeks.
Back to SMB...It seemed that on every trip we heard Jungle Love in the car and it became our theme song. She would sing "Jungle Love, it's driving me crazy" and I would chime in with the follow to that "Crazy, crazy!". We'll remember this for the rest of our lives I'm sure!
We love the Steve Miller Band. Have a great time in Baltimore and don't forget to send some photos!
Thanks for your story Donna - I always say that every moment in my life has a soundtrack and I see you do too :) That's the power of music! And of course, I'll HAVE to share some photos from the trip!
