Nokia Reportedly Will Be Empty Handed At Mobile's Big Event

  • Bloomberg, Thursday, February 11, 2010 10:36 AM
Nokia Oyj has made a "strategic" decision to not show any new devices next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the industry's biggest annual gathering. It is the first time in at least a decade, Diana ben-Aaron reports, that it has not unveiled a mobile device at the show.

Instead, Nokia will focus on announcements highlighting CEO Olli- Pekka Kallasvuo's effort to transition from a hardware maker to a company offering customers paid applications and media on its devices, a well-placed source tells ben-Aaron.

"It would be a problem to have no introduction now because people want to see Nokia has something up its sleeve for summer," says MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen. "Last year, they had a huge presence. The Nokia booth was like a spaceship."

Meanwhile, Jeffrey McCracken and Dana Cimilluca report in the Wall Street Journal that Motorola is moving toward reversing a months-old strategy of selling off the largest of its three divisions and is close to rolling out a plan to revive an effort to separate the company's main business units, according to sources.
