Two major retailers have announced gifts to feed hungry Americans.
Because hunger is the classroom is a growing problem, Target says it is giving $3.5 million to Meals For Minds, a
partnership between Feeding America and local food banks. The gift includes $2.3 million to the program, as well as $1.2 million to local food banks, and 20 million pounds of food to children and
families in need in 2010. The Minneapolis-based retailer says 62% of teachers say that students come to school hungry each week, and 63% report buying food for the classroom with their own money.
And Macy's Partners In Time, its employee-based campaign, is giving $2.3 million to Bag Hunger, a program that benefits many Feeding America affiliates. (Feeding America is the largest domestic
hunger-relief charity in the U.S.)--Sarah Mahoney
