'WSJ' Captures 'Big Interview' Online

WSJ

The Wall Street Journal unveiled a new weekly online series featuring interviews with important figures. Called "The Big Interview," it consists of one interview each week with industry leaders and top officials, which will be posted on the site Friday mornings.

The interviews are available on demand and accompanied by display advertising as well as pre-roll ads -- in the case of FDIC chairwoman Sheila Bair's interview, for Yahoo.

The first interview featured Bair, who spoke with the WSJ's economics editor David Wessel for about 19 minutes, addressing major subjects such as the concentration of financial power in fewer banking institutions over the course of the financial crisis, and the future of banks that are considered "too big to fail."

The next interview, scheduled to be posted on July 2, will feature White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

"The Big Interview" is just the latest in a series of new products the WSJ has developed for its Web and print editions. Earlier this month, it launched "Opinion Journal Live," an online video series drawing on its editorial page content.

Earlier this month, the WSJ announced plans for a new 15- to-17-page Saturday section to compete with The New York Times' weekend leisure coverage in its Sunday paper.

In April, WSJ introduced a new 12-page New York section, which employs about 35 editorial staffers and covers real estate, culture, business, sports and metro news.

Editorial content is only part of the game. To extend the venerable brand, it debuted a branded travel agency, WSJTravel. And last year, it launched a mail-order wine club in partnership with Laithwaite's Wine Merchants.
