57 Million Dollars of Coupon Savings in First Half

According to coupon aggregator RetailMeNot, consumers saved about $57.4 million using online and printable coupons between January and June 2010. Between January 1 and June 30, 2010, printable coupon users saved about $8.17 million, downloading 1.66 million coupons.

During the first half of 2010, online coupon traffic measured about 80.25 million users, a 49% increase from 53.9 million users in the first half of 2009. In this time period, online coupon users generated about $49.3 million in savings.

 

There were 492,891 online coupons available for 66,883 retailers, and 56,077 printable coupons available for 52,000 stores. Online coupons generated about $192.4 million in sales, a 49% jump from $129 million in the first half of 2009. On average, consumers saved $29 per online coupon and $5 per downloadable coupon.

 

The three most-searched stores for online coupons in the first half of 2010 were Victoria's Secret, Amazon.com and Kohl's. Fantastic Sam's, IHOP and Kentucky Fried Chicken were the top three printable brands searched during the six-month period, while the top three printable categories searched were food, clothing and restaurants.

The top three states using printable coupons were New Jersey, Illinois and Minnesota, while the top three states using online coupons were New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

Savings generated from digital coupons doubled between June 30, 2009 and June 30, 2010, according to Coupons.com. More than $1 billion in digital coupon savings was printed or loaded to a store loyalty card via Coupons.com and the Coupons.com network in the last 12 months. This represents about 100% growth from $529 million in savings generated between June 30, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

    can someone explain the math to me? Are coupons really a tiny fraction of one percent of sales? (1% is 3-5 billion, I believe)

    Joel this is just online coupons. Does not include coupons from sunday papers and other sources. I also am not sure if the numbers reflect number of coupons printed and their total value, or actual ones redeemed. It seems to say just printed which means redeemed value could be much less in value.
