Time Warner Invests In Conviva, Ups TV Everywhere Growth

An arm of Time Warner has invested $15 million in Conviva, which provides the technological backbone for online video platforms, such as TV Everywhere. Time Warner has a relationship with the company for its HBO Go offering.

Conviva’s TV Everywhere product carries a Subscriber Xtension brand and helps authenticate broadcast quality to performance data. In September 2010, Conviva secured $15 million from a collection of venture capital and private equity firms. CEO Darren Feher, a West Point graduate, joined from NBCUniversal in 2009, where he was chief technology officer.

The company said the financing from Time Warner Investments will be used for international growth and to hire more staff.

Besides HBO, Time Warner uses Conviva to power TV Everywhere initiatives for its Turner networks. Scott Levine, the managing director of Time Warner Investments, called Conviva the “leader in the preemptive video stream optimization and video-specific analytics space.”

A separate Conviva product, Event Control Live, helps programmers ensure quality delivery of live sports or other events online. For the 2010 World Cup, the company’s infrastructure helped deliver streaming of games for Univision domestically, as well as through other providers in other markets, such as CBC in Canada, reaching 30 million unique viewers globally.

Last month, Time Warner Investments announced its leadership in $12 million funding round at social TV analytics company Bluefin Labs.
