Netflix Updates iPhone App To Hog Less Mobile Data

In an attempt to prevent mobile users from using too much of their monthly mobile data cap, Netflix on Friday updated its iPhone app to allow users to stream exclusively via WiFi.

As TG Daily points out, this means that if you use the Netflix app near a remembered WiFi network, it will use that instead of your mobile data. And if you try to use Netflix in a place where you don’t have a WiFi connection, it simply will not play any videos as a default.

Separately, the article also mentions that Netflix was pressured by Verizon and AT&T to pay for customers’ data usage from within mobile apps. “That's a pretty bold request from companies that decided to stop offering unlimited data to its customers,” the article says. However, given the new update, it’s clear that Netflix did not acquiesce.
