CNN Airport Muscles Up with New Programming

CNN Airport Network is bolstering its programming lineup with new sports and entertainment offerings, the digital out-of-home network announced this week.

CNN Airport’s new offerings include three- and four-minute clips from “Conan,” the TBS talk show hosted by Conan O’Brien, as well as full-length segments from HBO’s “Real Sports With Byrant Gumbel,” including program introductions hosted by Gumbel. These will join CNN Airport’s existing lineup, which includes news from CNN and HLN, original travel features, entertainment programming from HBO, TBS, TNT and TCM, and live sporting events from premiere sports leagues like the NBA, MLB and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

The CNN Airport Network currently includes distribution in 50 of the largest U.S. airports.

The timing of the new offerings is probably no coincidence, as CNN Airport faces new competition from Clear Channel Airport’s new TV network, ClearVision, which allows travelers to choose video content from a variety of publishers for consumption on their mobile devices via airport-based WiFi as well as via place-based TV networks in airports. ClearVision content -- entertainment, news, music, and sports programming -- comes from over 100 providers, including CBS, NBC, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ Live), and the Tennis Channel, as well as local TV stations, allowing travelers to access local news and weather.

At Dallas’ Love Field Airport, CCA also created a special children’s programming channel to be shown in “Kids’ Zone” play areas around the airport. The new product, “ClearVision Kids,” will be available at other airports with dedicated facilities for children.
