Baseball Scores Over Prime-Time Fare

Higher broadcast TV ratings -- and stiffer competition -- came from a mid-July Tuesday night, when Fox’s “2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game” and NBC’s summer strong “America’s Got Talent” went head to head.

Baseball bested the talent show with Fox grabbing a Nielsen preliminary 2.9 rating/9 share among 18-49 viewers -- about the same as last year’s game, with “Talent” a bit behind -- getting to a 2.5/7, down from its 2.6 rating of a week ago.

One bright surprise came from returning half-hour sketch comedy show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” on CW at 8:30 p.m. (previously on ABC), which reached a 1.1/3 and saw 2.95 million overall viewers. The 18-49 ratings were the network’s best in the time period since February 2011.

But another new CW series -- “Perfect Score," a dating/competition show -- offered up a much more average network rating performance -- a 0.4/1 (980,000 overall average viewers) for its initial half-hour show at 9 p.m. and a 0.3/1 (800,000 viewers) at 9:30 p.m.

The other summer original series of note -- ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss” -- climbed to a 1.1/3 and 3.45 million viewers, running between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., about the same as its previous outing.

All other network programming was in reruns.

Fox was No. 1 for the night in all key categories -- 18-49, total viewers, and 18-34. Fox was at a 2.9/9 among 18-49 viewers ; NBC, 2.0/6; Univision, 1.5/5; CBS, 1.0/3; ABC, 1.0/3; and CW, a 0.7/2. Total viewers had Fox at 10.3 million; NBC, 7.9 million; CBS, 6.5 million; Univision, 4.0 million; ABC, 3.3 million; and CW, 1.9 million. Among young 18-34 viewers, Fox was at a 2.5/9; NBC and Univision both at a 1.5/5; CW at a 0.8/3; and CBS and ABC tied for last, each at 0.6/2.
