Yahoo and Mozilla Wednesday announced a five-year partnership that makes Yahoo the default search experience for Firefox in the United States on mobile and desktop. The
agreement also provides a framework for exploring future product integration and distribution opportunities to other markets, per the companies.
Yahoo calls the deal the most significant
partnership in the past five years.
As part of this partnership, Yahoo will provide U.S. Firefox users with an enhanced search experience powered by Microsoft Bing Firefox, which is
scheduled to launch December 2014. The companies describe the features and design as "clean, modern and immersive."
"We're thrilled to partner with Mozilla. Mozilla is an
inspirational industry leader who puts users first and focuses on building forward-leaning, compelling experiences," said Marissa Mayer, Yahoo CEO, in a prepared statement.
"At Yahoo, we believe deeply in search - it's an area of investment, opportunity and growth for us."
The partnership helps to expand Yahoo's reach in search and gives the company an
opportunity to work closely with Mozilla and more broadly in search and digital content.
Some say deal could increase share for the Yahoo-Bing ad network. "It's the same back-end
experience powered by Bing, but we're updating the front-end, what searchers see," per a Yahoo spokesperson. "We become the default search engine on the Firefox browser."
