New developments — including a judge allowing a suspect out on bail — are lending fresh urgency to media efforts on behalf of the National Union of
Journalists of the Philippines. Back in November, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Ampatuan massacre, which left 58 dead, the organization worked with BBDO Guerrero, which tapped Leeroy
Newman to do an installation, portraying the victims made out
of newspaper. (Some 32 of the victims were media workers, making it the deadliest attack on media.)
The installation was exhibited at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City. Another agency, the Philippine Integrated Advertising Agency, conceptualized a 30-second PSA. Like the art installation, its aim is to keep attention focused on prosecuting those responsible.
