Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Won On Twitter, If Nowhere Else

It may well have been the most boring boxing match in history, but the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight received a lot of attention on Twitter -- even if a lot of it was just people voicing regret that they had paid $100 to see the soporific showdown on pay-per-view courtesy of HBO and Showtime, or “pay per snooze” as some dubbed it. By comparison, the weekend’s other big sporting event -- the Kentucky Derby -- was a pipsqueak on social media.

According to social tracking data from ListenFirst, which powers MediaPost’s Digital Engagement Index, the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight generated 2.4 million tweets containing the hashtag #maypac between 6:30 a.m. PT on Saturday and 6:30 a.m. PT on Sunday. By comparison, the Kentucky Derby generated a paltry 144,400 Twitter mentions using various hashtags.

Twitter activity for the boxing match soared beginning at 8 p.m. and peaked at 9 p.m., right after the fight started, with 682,000 tweets during the hour. However by 10 p.m. it was already declining and by midnight it was all over, as they say. Clearly, boxing fans were not impressed.

Indeed, the majority opinion seemed to be that the fight fairly well sucked. To quote a representative headline from USA Today's “For the Win” blog, “Mayweather-Pacquiao was a complete waste of time and money,” with the post concluding: “Boxing is dead and Mayweather-Pacquiao killed it. Never again will people shell out $100 to watch two old men grab at each other for 36 minutes.” SBNation.com made it personal: “If you paid $100 for Mayweather-Pacquiao, you're a chump.” Ouch.

Twitter users famous and ordinary alike echoed this opinion. Mike Tyson tweeted: “We waited five years for that… underwhelmed #MayPac.”
