Dish Sub Losses Deepen In Q2, Net Profits Higher

Dish Network’s subscriber losses have picked up steam in the second quarter.

Dish lost 281,000 subscribers versus 81,000 in the same quarter a year ago. This includes results from its digital video service Sling TV.

Overall, Dish now has 13.6 million subscribers; a year ago at the end of the second quarter, Dish total 13.9 million subscribers. Analysts say Sling TV -- which launched a year and a half ago -- has around 700,000 subscribers.

Dish’s net income grew 27% to $410 million from $324 million in the second-quarter 2015, with total revenue virtually unchanged -- $3.84 billion versus $3.83 billion.

Its average price per consumer has grown to $89.98 a month from $87.91.

Analysts were expecting slightly higher revenues -- but net income over-delivered. Dish lost about 15,000 broadband subscribers; now totaling 613,000 subscribers.

Initially, Dish stock price sank 4% after the news was released early Thursday. But by mid-day the stock recovered -- down just 0.2% to $51.87.

Dish’s stock has sunk 24% during the past year from a high of $68.22 closed on August 5th.
