AT&T Announces DirecTV Now Launch, Price

On the heels of its big announcement to buy Time Warner, AT&T has noted that the planned DirecTV Now, an Internet-delivered service of linear TV networks, is ready to go.

DirecTV Now is being priced at $35 a month for more than 100 channels -- which, according to analysts, would make it competitive with other Net-delivered services. DirecTV Now would also include unlimited mobile data.

DirecTV Now will be offered to consumers starting in November, and unlike traditional pay TV provide packages, there will be no annual contract.

By way of comparison, Sling TV charges $20 for a package of around 25 channels; its highest-priced package is $40 for 50 channels. Sony PlayStation Vue is priced at $55 for 100 channels, and it also has a cheaper $40 package for around 60 channels.

Two other proposed Internet-delivered package of linear TV networks — YouTube's Unplugged and one from Hulu — have yet to formalize start dates and pricing. Unplugged has already signed on CBS. 21st Century Fox, ABC-Disney and NBCUniversal are also in reported talks.

At a digital media conference on Tuesday, Randall Stephenson, chairman/CEO of AT&T, said DirecTV Now would have major network/channels, including Time Warner, NBCUniversal and 21st Century Fox.

Analysts believe these digital services will look to target 20 million TV homes. Currently, there are around 100 million U.S. TV homes that have traditional pay TV services.
