Sony's Crackle Orders Comedy 'Federal Offense'

Sony’s ad-supported streaming service Crackle has acquired a new comedy, “Federal Offense,” from production company Boundless Pictures.

The show will star Chevy Chase as “a foul-mouthed grandfather who is broken out of his nursing home,” according to a company release.

This pickup is the latest move by Crackle to compete with streaming services like Hulu and Netflix by expanding its premium content lineup. Earlier this year, the company ordered a series adaption of the Guy Ritchie film “Snatch” and a drama called “The Oath” from rapper 50 Cent.

Unlike Netflix, however, Crackle is building its business around premium advertising, rather than paid subscriptions.

The company has been investing significantly in original programming to supplement its Sony-fueled content library. Still, there have been setbacks. The service lost its biggest show earlier this year, when Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee” left for Netflix.
