Turner Taps AWS As Cloud Provider

Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting unit is tapping Amazon's Amazon Web Services division to handle its cloud computing efforts.

Turner, which includes brands like CNN, TNT, TBS and Cartoon Network, will move its library of video content to AWS as part of the deal. That library includes a 15-petabyte archive of CNN videos that stretches back to the channel's founding in 1980.

In addition to helping host and deliver video content, AWS will be using its machine learning capabilities to help the media company optimize video delivery, viewing experiences and data that could be relevant to advertisers or content creators.

The Turner deal comes one day after AWS formally unveiled a suite of products designed to help companies launch over-the-top video services. As companies increase their video output, they are leaning on tech companies to help them deliver that video efficiently.

While some media companies, like Disney, are investing in their own streaming technology (Disney acquired streaming provider BamTech earlier this year), others, like Turner, are relying on third parties like Amazon.
