Gmail Users Are Spamming Themselves: Reports

Gmail users found their sent folders crowded with spam emails over the weekend, raising fears that their accounts have been compromised. In addition, the messages were sent to other addresses.

The messages concern weight loss and growth supplements for men

“My email account sent out 3 spam emails I the past hour to a list of about 10 addresses that I don’t recognize,” writes one Gmail user, according to reports. “I changed my password immediately after the first one, but then it happened again 2 more times.

Google says it is working on the problem, and denies that accounts have been compromised.

“We are aware of a spam campaign impacting a small subset of Gmail users and have actively taken measures to protect against it,” Google states, according to Mashable. “This attempt involved forged email headers that made it appear as if users were receiving emails from themselves, which also led to those messages erroneously appearing in the Sent folder.”

Google adds that it has identified and is reclassifying all those emails as spam.
