Boomerang, the cartoon-focused subscription streaming video service owned by Turner Broadcasting, is looking to the classics to grow its subscriber base.
The service announced three new series on Wednesday, as well as six renewals, with a heavy emphasis on iconic cartoons that would be familiar to many parents of today’s youth.
The new shows include a reboot of “Scooby Doo” called “Scooby Doo and Guess Who?” seeing the cast team up with celebrities like NBA star Chris Paul, comedian Ricky Gervais and characters like Wonder Woman and Batman to solve mysteries.
The service also ordered a new show based on “The Flintstones” called “Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs!,” which will see Pebbles Flintstone and Bamm-Bamm Rubble explore a world filled with dinosaurs. Boomerang also ordered an adaptation of the classic children’s book “The Wind in the Willows.”
The new shows join a lineup already filled with recognizable programming, including reboots of “Tom & Jerry,” “Bunnicula,” and a series based on “The Wizard of Oz.”
Boomerang launched as a streaming service a little over a year ago, and was designed as a complement to the linear channel of the same name.
As consumers increasingly embrace streaming video however, and with children’s programming seen as a particularly ripe area for growth, the company has made an effort to bolster its original programming output, as well as its features.
