Now that technology and advertising will inevitably change on May 25, when Europe's GDPR becomes law, Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella seeks to be an industry leader on policy related to the new guidelines.

"We have to operate” in a way that acknowledges “that privacy is a human right," Nadella said during his keynote speech at VivaTech 2018 in Paris. 

Microsoft is implementing the new GDPR guidelines across its regions, the Microsoft chief indicated. "We have the scale to recognize and act."

The company is also more broadly sharing its ethical principles developed by an in-house committee in the hope that others will adopt similar values. Further, Microsoft intends to lead a coalition pushing for what it calls the Geneva Convention of digital rights to ensure all organizations are protected from cybercrimes.

This set of human values and principles will help guide the choices we make, he says. 

And, in a bid to move the firm beyond its monopolistic image, Nadella said Microsoft "isn't about celebrating tech breakthroughs" on its own, but instead wants to collaborate with others to change the world.

To that end, Microsoft Azure's set of tools are now available to every developer across all languages and platforms so they can all benefit from its technology.
