Cheddar Buys MTV Networks On Campus, Launches CheddarU

Cheddar, the streaming news, business and lifestyle channel, has bought MTV Networks On Campus from Viacom.

Cheddar will use the distribution platform to launch a live news network called CheddarU, which will be made available to the 600 college campuses part of the former MTV Networks On Campus platform.

CheddarU will be shown in public spaces like gyms and cafeterias, and on campus TV systems, available for free to any qualifying campus that wants it. It will live inside the company’s ChedNet division, which seeks to place Cheddar programming inside public spaces like restaurants, hotels and airports.

The online textbook rental company Chegg and the streaming music service Pandora have signed on as launch sponsors of CheddarU. Chegg will sponsor programming about “education, study, and professional development,” while Pandora will be the official music partner, supporting coverage off artists and album charts.

MTVU, a channel covering aspects of student life, which had been distributed through MTV Networks On Campus, will remain part of Viacom, and will be available through traditional distributors.
