Sleep Tight

SleepScore has launched new technology that will let anyone with a smartphone gain access to a more accurate sleep measurement system than perceived industry leaders Fitbit, Nokia and Sleep Cycle. According to data collected over six million nights of sleep by SleepScore Labs, approximately 85% of people misdiagnose their own sleep problems due to a lack of measurable insight about their sleep patterns.

According to SleepScore Labs, at least 1.2 billion people worldwide suffer from a variety of sleep issues, and nearly 60% of all people misunderstand their own sleep problems. SleepScore combines the convenience of a free standalone smartphone app with the clinically verified accuracy of sleep-detecting sonar algorithms developed over the past 13 years by ResMed, a global leader in sleep medical devices, tested and validated against polysomnography at accredited sleep labs worldwide.

SleepScore accesses a smartphone’s microphones and speakers to detect users’ sleep patterns without the need for obtrusive wearable devices or placing sensors under a pillow or mattress. SleepScore’s advanced algorithms interpret the shape and movement of the reflected sound waves to sense breathing rate and body movements. The combination of these signals deciphers which sleep stage the user is in (wake, light sleep, deep sleep or REM), as well as the number of times users wake up through the night and the time it takes to fall asleep.

Colin Lawlor, CEO of SleepScore Labs, says “… sleep affects all facets of people’s health, and yet there has been no easy way to accurately measure it everywhere we sleep… we’ve been developing this technology longer than the iPhone has existed… (now) virtually everyone can get a truer picture of their sleep health for free… “
