Sony Follows Dish, DirecTV, Raises Streaming Bundle Fees

The price to cut the cord continues to get just a bit more expensive. Sony says that its Playstation Vue streaming bundle will rise in price by $5 per month later this month.

All tiers of the service will see the price increase, with the base tier now costing $45 per month.

The move by Sony follows similar price hikes by Dish Network’s Sling TV, which raised the price of its base package to $25, and by AT&T’s DirecTV Now, which raised the price of its base package to $40.

Competitors like Hulu with Live TV, Fubo TV and YouTube TV all have starting prices in the $40 per month range.

In a blog post announcing the change, Dwayne Benefield, VP and head of Playstation Vue, writes that “Unfortunately, we must increase the price of our multi-channel plans to keep pace with rising business costs and enable us to continue offering a better way to watch the best in live sports, entertainment, and news.”

In other words, much like its competitors, Sony had to deal with rising carriage costs from channels and the development of new technologies in order to remain competitive.
