Research into an email address listed in the indictments handed down by Special Counsel Robert Mueller revealed over 9 million email accounts that were orphaned, stolen or leaked, according to
Shark20385, a study by GroupSense, a provider of cyber intelligence services.
GroupSense researchers analyzed the password for one of the email addresses listed in the indictments,
allforusa@yahoo.com, and found that it was computer generated. They then identified more than 9 million email addresses with similar computer-generated passwords, the company claims.
According to GroupSense, the researchers also determined that:
- Bad actors paired hijacked email accounts with other stolen credential data to conduct campaigns.
- One email
address, AllforUSA@yahoo.com, was linked by the Mueller team to Russia’s Internet Research Agency and used to operate a Reddit account. It allegedly posted fake news stories during the 2016
Presidential campaign. It is now tied to a Russian gambling site.
Kurtis Minder, CEO of GroupSense, says the firm often finds suspicious data. “In this case, we knew it may
have not only impacted our customers, but the nation," he adds.
