Many Adlanders Say A Colleague Tried To Make Them Look Bad

Talk about your workplace snake pits.

According to new research from recruitment firm The Creative Group, part of Robert Half, nearly half (49%) of advertising and marketing managers indicated a coworker tried to make them look bad on the job.

When this happens, most respondents (53%) said the best way to handle the situation is to confront the offender directly.

But another 34% said take the issue to the person’s manager.

The Creative Group recommends trying the direct approach first, in a calm reasonable manner. But as the firm notes, sometimes people are just toxic and beyond reasonable discussion. In that case, going to HR or a higher up isn’t a bad idea.

While an overly competitive work environment can hurt morale and collaboration, the research shows more than half (56%) feel a little competition can be a good thing.

But as we all know, Adland is full of A-personality types who probably account for the 39% who enthusiastically embrace competition among coworkers (“bring it on!”) believing it to be a productivity booster.

Findings are based on a survey of more than 400 advertising and marketing hiring decision makers in the U.S.
