Domino's Adds Pizza Order Location Tracking

One of the features of the Internet of Things is the ability to know where things are, since connected things can continually transmit their location.

Anyone who has used a ride-hailing service like Uber or Lyft is well aware of this, as they can track the progress of the car they requested on the way to pick them up. They even can see if the driver went the wrong way, along with the associated delay in pickup time.

Now Domino’s is getting into the act in a test of GPS driver tracking in 27 corporate-owned stores throughout Phoenix.

“Transparency on orders that are out on the road makes a big difference to customers, as well as drivers and store managers,” states Dennis Maloney, senior vice president and chief digital officer of Domino’s. “With GPS tracking, everyone can have the best possible delivery experience.”

After ordering, a pizza customer can track the location of their order and driver on a map from the order confirmation page on the Domino’s website or mobile app.

Customers also will get an estimated delivery time and can receive a text notification when the order is two minutes away, much like Uber and Lyft notify that the car arrival is imminent.

The tracking feature also is planned for select areas of Michigan, Virginia and Washington State.

In addition to customers tracking their pizza order, store managers can track where the drivers are and where they are headed.

In the Internet of Things, anything that moves will be tracked. Even pizza.
