AT&T Takes IoT Network Live Nationwide

AT&T has launched its NarrowBand Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network nationwide, allowing for the next wave of IoT connections.

The network, promised last year for delivery this spring, includes an upgrade of 4G LTE cell sites across the U.S.

“The devices that ride on these networks can be configured to go dormant when not in use,” states the AT&T announcement.  “That opens a host of uses that don’t need constant cellular connections. Think of things like utility meters, leak detectors, street lights and smart appliances.”

AT&T is working with suppliers to certify $5 modules that connect devices to NB-IoT, with pricing at $5 a year for each connected device.

NB-IoT is expected to be global eventually, with deployment in Mexico starting later this year.
