Gmail service went down in the UK and the Northeastern and Southwestern U.S. on Sunday afternoon, according to downdetector. But it appeared to be coming back in some areas.

The problems began at 2:53 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon, and seemed to spike around 5 p.m. Of over 5,000 reports coming in to downdetector, 51% cited log-in difficulties, 42% were for failure to receive messages and 6% cited website problems.

“Gmail down in Ontario, Canada,” writes one user in a message posted shortly after 6 p.m. 

“Down in London even though status page suggest(s) it’s US only,” writes another. 

Other users say Gmail isn’t working on their iPhone, mail app on Mac or Outlook. 

One report came from as far afield as Indonesia.

Attempting to log in in New York, a user received an error message: “The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.” Moments later, the person was able to log in and send emails. Then it went down again. 

Another user says service is back up in San Diego.

UPDATE, MONDAY MORNING:

Google says it has resolved the issues that started on Sunday, affecting Google, G Suite, Google Cloud and YouTube. It blamed high levels of congestion, according to media reports.

However, problems began again Monday morning, starting at 12:57 a.m., according to downdetector.

”I am at school trying to get ready to teach and I cannot access my calendar or my google drive,” writes one user on downdetector.

“Your not the only ones with issues, I have same

problem with gmail and google drive not loading......

should be an interesting day,” writes another.

UPDATE, MONDAY AFTERNOON:

Problems have continued into Monday afternoon, hitting a peak around 4 p.m. ET, according to posts on downdetecor.

"Gmail page will not load for last few hours," writes one user in a comment posted at around 4 p.m. ET. 

"Gmail not sending in NW Florida since 2:00 PM," writes another. 

Another Gmail user writes, "Since 7 am. PT: Taking forever to load and once loaded, no new emails arrive and cannot open or delete emails. Can get emails on iphone.":
