Facebook Bans Pre-Installation Of Its Apps On Huawei Phones

Siding with the White House on at least one issue, Facebook officially wants nothing to do with Huawei.

Specifically, Facebook will no longer let the Chinese tech giant preinstall phones with its family of apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp, according to a report in Reuters, which noted that Huawei phones with existing Facebook apps should still be able to receive updates.

Facebook did not return a request for comment.

Facebook’s move coincides with a decision by the Trump administration to ban U.S. companies from working with Huawei.

Not all U.S. tech companies are thrilled with the decision, however. Google, for one, is lobbying for the right to continue working with Huawei, the Financial Times reports.

Google did, however, revoke licenses from Huawei so that the company could no longer install Gmail and the Google Play app store on its phones.

At present, Huawei remains the world’s second-largest smartphone maker, according to recent figures from IDC.
